There are two laws in biology: all organisms are mortal and all species go extinct. Anatomically modern humans emerged approximately three hundred thousand years ago and the great leap to modern behavior (art, tools, language) occurred roughly sixty thousand years ago. Mammalian species last about a million years (outcomes vary), meaning our species is still relatively young. One may speculate — or perhaps only hope — that we will survive for a few hundred thousand years yet. However, we cannot exclude the possibility that our intelligence will prove to be a lethal mutation and will contribute to an earlier extinction.
